The Book of Palms

950 TL

On December 15, 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and Director of the Royal Botanical Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin lined with fresh palm leaves. These leaves were related to the plant discoveries made by von Martius in Brazil and Peru and the 240 exquisite chromatographic drawings attached to them. From 1817 to 1820, Martius had traveled 2,250 km across the Amazon basin to study the natural history of the area and its indigenous tribes with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix. The result was an unrivaled catalog of all known genera of the palm family. The author of this book, H. Walter Lack, is Martius's works; It describes palm classification, comprehensive species descriptions, and Brazil's first palm biogeographic maps.
